Our wish is to provide guests with a warm and welcome stay. We hope you will enjoy a happy stay in the comfort and superior amenity of a landmark building that reflects and preserves the genuine character of our local community.
Our building formerly known as Argyle North is a local icon dating back to the early 1900s when it first opened for business as a grocery shop. Over the decades since it has served the local community as a greengrocer, a mini-market, a general convenience store, and take away cafe. Just across the road from the North Hobart Oval the Argyle Street Apartments building is a local landmark.
We are proud to have saved and restored the original building by including two ground-level studio apartments at the rear and a stunning two-bedroom corner apartment above the original store which now offers a delightful Asian eat-in and take-away menu.
THE PHOTO ON THE LEFT WAS TAKEN FROM THE HOBART DOMAIN CIRCA 1915 WHEN THE GELLIBRAND FAMILY OPERATED THE FIRST GROCERY STORE IN THE AREA.
THE PHOTO ON THE RIGHT SHOWS THE BUILDING IN 2017 AS RENOVATION AND RESTORATION WORKS NEAR COMPLETION.
OVER THE YEARS 342 ARGYLE STREET SERVED THE COMMUNITY IN MANY GUISES FROM A MINI MARKET AND CONVENIENCE STORE TO A TAKE AWAY FOOD OUTLET OFTEN WITH THE SHOPKEEPERS LIVING UPSTAIRS.
SADLY WITH CONSTANT CHANGES OF USE BOTH THE INTERNAL FABRIC AND THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE BUILDING ITSELF DETERIORATED BADLY.
THE NORTH HOBART BUILDING HAS BEEN RESTORED AND REFURBISHED WITH CARE AND AFFECTION.
THE ENTIRE BUILDING HAS BEEN MADE OVER FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND INSIDE OUT.
ORIGINAL WINDOWS HAVE BEEN KEPT AND DOUBLE GLAZED WHERE POSSIBLE AND REPLICAS MADE OF THOSE THAT COULD NOT BE SAVED.
THE EXTERIOR HAS BEEN TAKEN BACK TO THE CHARMING FACADE OF HOW IT WOULD HAVE LOOKED IN THE 1920S.
THE ORIGINAL UPSTAIRS RESIDENCE IS NOW A STRIKING TWO BEDROOM APARTMENT WITH LOVELY VIEWS, BEAUTIFUL TIMBER FLOORS AND EVERY MODERN CONVENIENCE.
THE TERRIBLY NEGLECTED CONDITION OF THE OLD BUILDING MEANT WALLS AND FLOORS WERE UNSAFE NEEDING NEW STEEL SUPPORT BEAMS TO BE INSERTED. OLD DRAINS HAD CAUSED DAMPNESS AND COLLAPSING WALLS AND FLOORS.
NOW THE GROUND FLOOR GROCERY STORAGE AREAS OF THE OLD BUILDING HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO TWO BEAUTIFUL ONE BEDROOM STUDIO APARTMENTS.
RENOVATION WORKS UNCOVERED A FEW SURPRISES.
MIGRANT BUILDERS HAD INSCRIBED THEIR NAMES ON TIMBERS WHEN THE ORIGINAL CORNER DOOR WAS SEALED DECADES AGO.
UPSTAIRS OLD GAS LIGHT FITTINGS AND PIPING WERE FOUND AND EARLY ADVERTISING SIGNAGE WAS UNCOVERED ON THE YARDLEY STREET FACADE.
ARGYLE STREET APARTMENTS SIT COMFORTABLY WITHIN A PEACEFUL COMMUNITY JUST METRES FROM THE HISTORIC NORTH HOBART OVAL AND A SHORT WALK TO THE LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT STRIP.
THE AREA IS QUIET AND PEACEFUL AND YET IT IS CONVENIENT TO ALL HOBART HAS TO OFFER.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS EASY TO ACCESS, CAR PARKING IS AVAILABLE AND THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED BY CCTV SECURITY CAMERAS.
“This place is wonderful. A modern unit with outstanding amenities and a superb location too. We had a car during our stay, but it’s not too far to walk to the waterfront. Grant and Luise were amazing hosts and my partner and I certainly recommend their place for anyone who wants a privacy, but doesn’t want to be too far from everything Hobart has to offer!”
